Do Your Part
July and August 2017
The Sunday Offering for the months of July and August will be given to Do Your Part, a disaster relief organization based in the United States and doing work both within the US and internationally. Do Your Part was born in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, when the need for immediate assistance was slowed by the bureaucracy of larger organizations. This small nonprofit organization provides disaster response and logistics, disaster relief and long term recovery, and disaster preparation and planning.
Currently, Do Your Part’s primary effort is focused on management and support of a refugee camp in Oinofyta, Greece, a temporary home to 500 refugees, most from Afghanistan, and some from Iran and Pakistan. The residents arrived at Oinofyta intending to remain there for a short time until they were able to travel north and settle in other European countries. However, the borders have now closed, and the residents’ options have become much more limited.
Donations to Do Your Part funded the construction of second-level accommodations to move residents out of tents, a community kitchen, and sanitary facilities. In addition to progressive project management, Do Your Part volunteers have created and coordinate a sewing center, barber/beauty shop, computer lab, and community garden, in addition to providing financial support for a medical trailer and a school, both run by other agencies.
Do Your Part also provides food for the residents – both staples and fresh produce – and personal hygiene products. Do Your Part was nominated by Linda Myers, an EUUC member who has made three trips to volunteer at Oinofyta since last summer. Her most recent trip was in March, when she and her husband Art spent a month working with residents and volunteers.
EUUC’s contributions will be used to buy food, personal hygiene supplies, and transportation, helping to insure that the residents of Oinofyta are supported while they consider their options for the future.
What is the Sunday Offering?
When the baskets are passed during Sunday services, people contribute cash and checks to help the recipient organization which was chosen for that month. Checks written to “EUUC” with “cause” on the memo line and all cash are tallied each Sunday. At the end of the month, a check is written for the recipient organization.
