The November cause of the month is Afghan Advantage (AA+). This is a grass roots organization formed and led by Afghan women. Their mission is to Nurture Communication, Self-Reliance, Literacy and Leadership by Building Community Connections Through Increased Access to Information, Experiences, and Targeted Life Skills.
Afghan Advantage has provided literacy training for Afghan women and girls in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. 50% of their students have zero literacy. In Afghanistan, women have the world’s lowest literacy rate (22%) and rank last in human rights (UNESCO, 2023). In Afghanistan, it is unlawful for women to work, study, speak, shop, or travel.
Washington has welcomed 23,102 Afghan allies since 2018. King County is 1 of 4 counties in the US welcoming a combined 27% of all resettled Afghan refugees. AA+ provides training for transportation independence. This is critical for women who want to share family responsibilities, pursue education, secure employment, and achieve economic mobility. They also teach basic math and consumer education which empowers newcomers to participate more fully in their communities and build financial security.
The funds donated by EUUC will provide funding for their programs that nurture communication, self-reliance and leadership.
As always, thank you for your generous donations.
